Bhubaneswar: The Utkal University on Saturday organized a research scholars' conclave to promote original work and check plagiarism in achieving PhD degrees.
University vice-chancellor Ashok Das said more than 100 research scholars showcased their works in 10 different categories at the conclave.
"Bringing researchers from various disciplines on the same platform will help promote relevant research, avoid duplication of efforts and promote quality.
Such conclaves will become annual affair," he said.
The university awarded the best papers in each category. Das said the conclave is part of a series of initiatives to promote research in the university.
The varsity had recently created a corpus of Rs 27 lakh for start-up research funding and another Rs eight lakh for research on out-of-the-box ideas by faculty members below 45 years of age.
Das said the university will provide rupees one lakh each to 15 young faculty members - 12 from the university and three from various affiliated colleges - for their original research ideas. "The amount will be increased to rupees two lakh for out-of-the-box ideas, which will be selected by an independent jury," he said.

Higher education minister Pradeep Panigrahy, who attended the valedictory session of the event, said the government will ask all universities to hold similar conclaves. Besides, the government will explore possibilities of holding a similar conclave at the state-level by involving scholars of all universities.
Panigrahy added the government will focus on funding for research in future. "Vice-chancellors will be consulted before budget for their feedback on research funding," he said.
