Power shortfall widening in northern, southern regions despite capacity addition

New Delhi, May 1 (UNI) India may be adding generation capacity at a fast pace, but electricity demand-supply gap could still widen in northern and southern region states in coming years.
As per the region-wise projections drawn up by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) on electricity demand and availability for the 13th Plan period, peak power shortfall in the northern region could increase to 18,753-22,269 MW in 2021-22 from the average of 1,875 MW in 2015-16. Similarly, power deficit in the southern region is seen increasing from the average level of 104 MW to 4,872-6,748 MW during the same period.
According to the CEA, power availability to the northern region will be in the range of 52,000-54,000 MW while demand could be as high as 71,000-76,000 MW.
Similarly, power availability to the southern region at the end of the 13th Plan is projected at 51,000-53,000 MW. Against that, demand is seen at 55,000-60,000 MW.
However, the assuring thing is that western, eastern and north- eastern regions are together estimated to have power surplus of nearly 24,000 MW, which can be tapped by northern and southern states to meet their shortfalls.
Based on these projections, the CEA has assessed requirement of transmission capacity in 2021-22 to wheel power.
Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP, Uttarakhand are constituents of the northern region. The southern region is comprised of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
