Gurgaon: A massive fire broke out at a vacant plot, which is used as a dumping ground by a nearby factory, in Udyog Vihar on Saturday afternoon. However, the fire department said there has been no casualty in the incident. The fire triggered panic in the area.
Six fire tenders — three each from Sector 29 and Udyog Vihar fire stations — rushed to the spot and it took them more than an hour to douse the blaze.
"The industrial waste caught fire and most of it was burnt by the time we had reached the spot. We are trying to ascertain what caused the fire and will know more after the embers die out. Also, we are trying to contact the owner of the vacant plot and the factory, and will take necessary action against them if they are found guilty," Birbal Sharma, fire safety officer, Gurgaon, said.
A part of plot number 390 is used as a parking lot for other companies in the area, while half of it is used a dumping yard by the garment manufacturing unit that runs in the adjacent plot number 389.
Sources said the manufacturer had dumped their industrial waste which became a huge pile of various flammable materials like cotton, fibre, threads, waste cloth etc.
On Saturday around 12:15pm, some people noticed smoke coming out of the plot and raised an alarm. The fire brigade was alerted at 12:20pm but because the material was highly flammable, the fire intensified quickly and thick smoke covered the area.
Seeing the smoke, security guards from adjacent plots tried to douse the fire and used three water pipes from plot number 391 to restrict it.
