Gutsy Bulls right on the button Down Under

A four-year winless drought for the Bulls in Australia came to a thrilling end when the Bulls annihilated the Western Force 42-20 in Perth on Friday. What former coach Frans Ludeke failed to do in the last three years of his rein as head honcho of the Pretoria side since their win against the Waratahs in May 2012, Nollis Marais managed to do in his first outing with the side Down Under."We are very happy and relieved," Marais said about his side's start to their three-match Aussie tour. The Bulls, given little chance at the start of the season, have surprised many since their defeat to the Stormers in their season-opening match in February. Since then Marais and his charges have gone on to win six and draw one of their eight matches so far.Despite the Force lingering at the foot of the Super Rugby log with the Southern Kings, the Bulls had to practise caution against the Western Australian side. After all, before Friday's game, the Bulls had not won in Perth since a 28-15 victory in 2010.The Force's response to their performance on the day was simple."We were not tough enough in the tough situations," captain Matt Hodgson said afterwards. The senior players in the Bulls side came to the party on Friday, with the young guns in the team following suit. Captain Adriaan Strauss and Bok centre Jan Serfontein led the charge with their best performances in the blue jersey. The Bok duo scored two tries each with the fifth Bulls try coming from last year's SA Under-20 captain Hanro Liebenberg, who made his first Super Rugby start for the side. Also impressive was lock Marvin Orie - who was a late replacement into the starting XV for the injured Jason Jenkins. The 23-year-old lanky second-rower, aside from his core duties in the lineout, made the third-most tackles in the match (11) behind teammate Lappies Labuschagne (18) and Hodgson (13)."I'm very happy with how Jan and Adriaan played. We needed the senior guys to come through for us, and the rest of the guys followed them," Marais said."It took a lot of effort from guys like Marvin [Orie] and Hanro (Liebenberg), and also [substitutes] Roelof [Smit] and Jannes (Kirsten) when they came on. The guys are really playing for each other. That is pleasing to see."The Bulls' next assignment will be against the Brumbies in Canberra - "a different and tougher challenge", according to Marais...
