Delhi Daredevils recovered from a horror start — 2/2 after the first over — to post 186/8, and then bowled out Kolkata Knight Riders for 159 to win by 27 runs and climb to joint second on the points table.

KKR, boasting a deep batting line-up, hadn’t lost while chasing in IPL-9. They needed a good start today but were only 21/0 after 2.5 overs. Then, even as Robin Uthappa (72 off 52 balls, 6x4, 2x6) kept one end safe, wickets started tumbling at the other end. On the sixth ball of the third over, bowled by Zaheer Khan, Gautam Gambhir edged the ball to Shreyas Iyer in the covers. In his next over, Zaheer trapped Piyush Chawla, promoted up the order to play the pinch-hitter, lbw for 8.

Yusuf Pathan (10) was the next to go, caught by Amit Mishra off Carlos Braithwaite when he pulled the ball to short fine-leg. Suryakumar Yadav and Uthappa then took KKR to 88/3 in 10 overs, and 99 more were needed in the last 10 overs. Yadav fell when he tried to clear mid-on but failed.

Mishra took a blinder to dismiss Andre Russell (17 off 12 balls, 2x4, 1x6) off his own bowling. Russell had smashed it back at Mishra and, more to protect himself, Mishra got his hands up; the ball stuck. It was 151/6, and KKR needed 36 off 18 balls. But they lasted only nine more deliveries.

Russell’s strikes

When Delhi batted, Russell struck early by dismissing openers Shreyas Iyer (0) and Quinton de Kock (1) in three balls. Sanju Samson fell for 15 (15 balls, 2x4) and it was 32/2 after five overs.

This brought the young Englishman Sam Billings, making his debut for KKR, to the middle. Nair and Billings added 105 for the fourth wicket, the former contributing 53 and Billings adding 45 in their partnership.
