GUWAHATI: : In a significant development, BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday met chief of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Mohan Bhagwat in Nagpur.
Elections in Assam are over and verdict will be out on May 19. RSS cadres worked overtime to match the organisational base of congress in Assam in the recently concluded election.

The meeting between Sonowal and Bhagwat lasted for 45 minutes. Student leader Sonowal left regional party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to join the Saffron party in 2011. In 2014 Sonowal became Union minister in the NDA government.

A senior RSS leader told ET, “It was a courtesy visit. RSS is very upbeat about BJP forming government in Assam together with its allies Asom Gana Parishad(AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF)”

Around 20, 000 to 25,000 cadres of Sangh Parivar worked for BJP for the crucial assembly polls early this month.

Another Sangh leader added, “In Assam, a departure was made from past practice and a chief ministerial candidate was projected. Local leadership was in control of the whole campaigning and electioneering.”
