Recently, several readers submitted #askcharlotte questions about how to treat the delicate, vulnerable neck area. We reached out to Charlotte’s Book expert dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross, who recently formulated a special neck emulsion treatment.

Q—How does the skin on my face differ from the skin on my neck? At what age should I be starting neck creams?

A—Dr. Dennis Gross, Charlotte’s Book Expert Dermatologist

The skin on our neck is unique—it’s actually 10 times thinner than the skin on our face. There are fewer oil glands, which can lead to dryness, as well as a different pore count than skin on the face. The skin on the neck also requires a different delivery system and texture to prevent and correct the typical signs of aging such as creping, neck rings, sagging, and wrinkles. I recommend starting a diligent anti-aging routine in your late 20s.

Q—Can I use Retin-A on my neck? Will it make a difference?

A—Dr. Gross

The answer is no. I prefer Retinol because I find Retin-A irritating on the neck, and it can also increase sun sensitivity (often people forget to extend their suncreen to the neck area). Retinol is the same category and more gentle, so it works beautifully, especially when paired with ferulic acid.

Q—What at-home treatments can I do to make my neck look firmer? Thermage is a bit out of my budget.

A—Dr. Gross

A diligent home routine can help. Because the skin on your neck is very different from the skin on your face, and therefore requires a special formulation. I’ve been working on my new Ferulic + Retinol Fortifying Neck Emulsion for a number of years—perfecting not only the powerful ingredient cocktail, but also the texture. The final treatment is one I am very excited to share with my patients and customers. It not only protects your neck from future damage, but also repairs existing damage to the skin—targeting fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, and sagging skin. This product works seamlessly into any existing beauty routine and can be used day or night.
