IT took some stern words at half-time from Bathurst City coach Lisa Quinn to spur her players into action on Saturday afternoon, but thankfully for the mentor it worked as they ended up with a 3-0 victory over women's Premier League Hockey rivals Confederates.
While the match was played in Orange, Bathurst City were expected to win comfortably against a Confederates outfit that sat on the bottom of the ladder.
But Bathurst City wasted a host of chances in the opening 35 minutes and at half-time, Feds were still on level terms at nil-all.
Quinn was far from happy
"We had a very ordinary first half, so I had a few little words during half-time and we came out much better in the second half, we scored within the first five or 10 minutes," Quinn said.
"I think we had a really poor warm up, it was in Orange and people were late, just a few little things added up. I think we were probably a little complacent.
"We didn't do the things I know we can do in the first half, but thankfully we came out in the second half and the girls played especially well."
Bec Bosianek certainly listened to the words of her coach during the break as early in the second half she inspired her team-mates by dispossessing Feds defenders.
Her efforts were rewarded with a 57th minute goal, which came off a nice back stick shot.
Prior to that Casey Bayliss scored in the 42nd minute while Kelly Baker, who had been playing in defence, added another when she capitalised on a rebound from a penalty corner play.
New City recruit Brielle Lovekin, a Newcastle native, impressed at inner while Ivy Moore worked tirelessly in the midfield as the Bathurst outfit got the competition points they were after.
"In that first half we just didn't have that fire in our pockets, even though we had the ball and controlled the game," Quinn said.
"They [Feds] didn't even get a short corner and I don't want to know how many we had and didn't score off.
"But to me, yes I was happy with a 3-0 win because the girls played exactly the way I know we can play in the second half. I was very happy with that, but I know we can't afford to start like that against better sides.
"We need to start with a bit more urgency and desperation."
The win was City's third of the season and keeps them inside the top four.
