Panaji: Fake bombs were defused at various locations, including at a shopping mall at Porvorim, by the Goa police in a mock drill, Sagar Kavach, on Friday. The two-day exercise, which began on Thursday, was conducted to strengthen coastal security.
Porvorim police received a call that some 'terrorists' had planted a bomb at a mall in Porvorim. Immediately after, Porvorim police rushed to the mall and evacuated the premises.
They simultaneously contacted the bomb disposal squad (BDS) and anti-terrorist squad (ATS) to carry out a bomb search.
Porvorim PI Jivba Dalvi said the ATS, BDS and Porvorim police began a search of the mall but were unable to locate the bomb. He added that they then combed through CCTV camera footage and found two persons planting a 'bomb' in the two-wheeler parking area.
With that clue in hand, police rushed to the site and Dalvi located the 'bomb' that was later defused.
Similarly, Porvorim police received information that the coastal police had intercepted a 'terrorist' entering the state's waters towards Betim. The team subsquently detained eight people and, after verification, it was found that they were decoys.
As part of the exercise, the BDS disposed a fake bomb at the Dona Paula jetty. Panaji police received a call that a few 'terrorists' entered via the sea and were proceeding towards the jetty. Police nabbed the 'terrorist' and, after verification, found that they, too, were decoys.
