Treated water for toilets used for drinking at Fukuoka school

FUKUOKA -- Treated water meant for flushing toilets was used for drinking water and hand-washing for 1 1/2 years at a local school as a result of a piping mistake, local government officials said.
According to the Fukuoka Municipal Government, a water piping company mistakenly connected a pipe for treated water to be used to flush toilets with a pipe for tap water at the Fukuoka Municipal Itazuke Junior High School during piping work from June to October 2014. As a result, treated sewage water came out of 50 faucets at the school from October 2014 to April 26 this year.
The finding prompted the city government to examine the quality of the water but did not detect coli bacilli or any other toxic substance. The water did not adversely affect students' health, city officials said.
Earlier this month, school officials noticed that water at a hand-wash station was cloudy and examined the piping to find the mistake.
