College Roundup: Isaac leads Vangaurd to win

Vanguard 10, Biola 4

Senior Sean Isaac improved to 13-1 to remain tied for the NAIA lead in wins as the host Lions opened the Golden State Athletic Conference series with a win.

Isaac allowed six hits and four runs in six innings. He struck out seven.

Paul Keating was three for five with two runs batted in and two runs, while Brandon Sandoval, Jose Rojas, Matt Harris and Sam Neufeld all had two hits and one RBI for the No. 13-ranked winners (36-12-1, 21-7 in conference).

Seven Vanguard starters drove in runs as the Lions rapped out 15 hits.

A Westmont win Friday clinched the GSAC regular-season title for the Warriors. Vanguard will finish second, its best conference finish since 1993.

Vanguard and Biola close the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

Orange Coast 9, Santa Ana 3

SANTA ANA — Robert Teel homered and drove in four runs and J.T. McLellan was two for five with one home run, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Jack Pabich went the distance to earn the win, allowing five hits and striking out seven for OCC (18-18, 9-12 in conference).

The Pirates tie for fifth in the OEC with Riverside, which swept OCC in three conference meetings.

Nick Grimes was two for four and Chris Prescott drove in a run for the winners, who will await word on whether they will be granted an at-large berth in the Southern California Regional playoffs.

Santa Ana is 19-17, 6-15.

SOFTBALL

Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament

ATHERTON — Vanguard University lost a pair on Friday and was eliminated at Menlo College.

The No. 3-seeded Lions, who defeated William Jessup, 4-0, in Thursday’s opening round, were edged by No. 2-seeded Arizona Christian, 3-2, early Friday, then fell to No. 4-seeded San Diego Christian, 9-1, Friday afternoon.

Taylor Doyle earned the pitching win Thursday, when Taylor Wilson was two for four with two runs batted in and Britany Heinle hit a solo home run.

Against Arizona Christian, Amber Huffman and Payton Ross were both two for two for the Lions, for whom Heinle was two for four with one RBI and Kristyn Whitley also drove in a run.

Vanguard is 34-22.
