Corporator to move Lokayukta over solid waste system
Mangaluru: JD(S) corporator M Abdul Azeez Kudroli plans to complain to Lokayukta against Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for violations that have allegedly taken place with regard to the implementation of three-package solid waste management system in the city.
Azeez told reporters on Thursday that the city corporation has been wasting public money to the tune of Rs 99 lakh per month through the system.
The matter was brought to the notice of city corporation council, but no action has been taken to plug leak of tax payers' money.
"As per the agreement, all vehicles used for secondary transportation should be new and it should be owned by the contractor (Antony Waste Handling Limited). Further, the contractor is not allowed to award sub-contract to carry out transportation of waste. However, out of 44 secondary transportation vehicles of the contractor, only 9 are new and remaining are old ones. Also, only 18 are owned by the contractor. The government has given approval for solid waste management in the city for Rs 9.72 core per annum. However, the contractor has submitted an annual bill of Rs 27.93 crore. Hence, there is a difference of Rs 18.21 crore when compared to proposal that the government has approved," Azeez said.
"Other than my complaint, Mangaluru City North MLA B A Mohiuddin Bava also has submitted complaints to the city corporation commissioner with regard to violations in solid waste management package.I have demanded the city corporation to cancel the contract of solid waste management considering the violations. If the city corporation does not initiate action within seven days, I will file complaint with the Lokayukta, the state accountant general and the high court," he added.
JD(S) Dakshina Kannada district president Mohammed Kunhi Vitla, corporator Rameeza Nasir and other leaders also backed Azeez.
