MC launches Citizen's Charter

Chandigarh: With the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation launching the Citizen's Charter on Friday, residents can expect timely completion of work in the city. The charter is to be implemented from May 2. Mayor Arun Sood, municipal commissioner Baldeo Purushartha, other officers and the municipal councillor formally launched the charter at the committee room of the MC building.
According to the mayor, the Citizen's Charter fixes a time frame for completion of tasks in departments like water supply, sanitation, building and roads, enforcement and horticulture, among others.
After May 2, delay in completing official work will entail punitive action for the official concerned, he said, adding that the charter aims at making the MC administration more transparent, simple, accountable and responsive. He also said the charter will be uploaded on the MC website, featuring a list of services to be provided within a fixed time frame.
Officers responsible for providing particular services have been designated. In order to engender efficiency and responsibility in the staff, it has been decided that penalties will be imposed on habitually errant officials. This will be done through the appellate authority mechanism. If the official responsible for providing the service is found to have made delays in 20% or more of the total cases which have been handled by him or her, then he or she will be penalised Rs 10 per day for the total number of delayed days subject to a maximum fine of Rs 1,000.
