Baaghi takes a good start

The only Bollywood release to take to the screen this week is Shraddha Kapoor and Tiger Shroff’s romantic action flick, Baaghi. Joining it are Hollywood releases Mother’s Day and The Man Who Knew Infinity. This also marks the beginning of Fan’s third week at the box-office and The Jungle Book’s fourth week run.

Released in 2750 screens nationwide and 344 screens overseas, Baaghi opened to occupancies of 30 per cent in the early shows today. As expected, the impact of the film is greater in mass centres than in urban theatres. With luck on its side, business is due to improve in the evening shows. The international releases, on the other hand, have got a lukewarm response in theatres so far.

A two-week old film now, Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan is likely reaching the end of its domestic box-office run. With sky-high figures of Rs 71.50 crore in the first week, the film faced a major decline in earnings in week two. After notching a second-week total of Rs 7.75 crore, earnings started to lose pace on Monday with only Rs 1.05 crore added to the kitty. This was followed by figures of Rs 1 crore on Tuesday, Rs 90 lakh and Rs 85 lakh on Thursday. With a second week total of Rs 11.55 crore, Fan’s domestic earnings stand at Rs 83.05 crore. Internationally, the film has fared well, with Rs 61.35 crore in earnings thus far, taking the worldwide total collections up to Rs 144.40 crore. At this rate, Fan is likely to close lifetime collections at Rs 85 crore in India.

The Jungle Book has enjoyed a golden run at the box-office thus far, having crossed the 100-crore mark within 10 days of its release. Having started off week three on a high with Rs 18.92 crore added to the kitty over the weekend, the film’s collections dropped slightly on Monday, earning Rs 3.02 crore. Steady but slipping numbers of Rs 3.01 crore on Tuesday, Rs 2.94 crore on Wednesday and Rs 2.67 crore on Thursday took the week’s total up to Rs 30.56 crore. With a total of Rs 153.61 crore in domestic earnings, the film is the highest grosser at the Indian box-office for 2016 so far. It’s also the highest earning international release this year as well. Likely to close lifetime collections with a total of Rs 160 crore, it’s safe to say that The Jungle Book has earned blockbuster status.
