The electronics market bounces back slightly in the UAE

The Technical Consumer Goods (TCG) market in the UAE has shown signs of positivity with an increase of 1.4 per cent reaching back to a turnover of Dh4.2 billion.
GITEX festive offers in the last quarter pushed back sales to optimistic levels. More precisely, Consumer Electronics (CE) and Photography (PH) sectors continued with a double-digit decline. The Major Domestic Appliances (MDA), Small Domestic Appliances (SDA) and Office Equipment and Consumables (OE) on the other hand registered single-digit growth. Information Technology (IT) sector witnessed single-digit decline. Conversely, Telecommunications (TC) reached double-digit growth respectively.
Consumer Electronics
The Consumer Electronics sector fell by 11.2 per cent in Q4 2015 compared to Q4 2014, reaching a total of Dh536.8 million. A successful 'GITEX Shopping Festival' provided consumers with heavy discounts and promotions leading to a double-digit growth for audio segments, docking mini speakers, loudspeakers and radio as well as USB memory sticks. All other segments failed to generate further revenue for the sector, including the number one segment panel TVs.
Photography
The Photography sector registered total revenue of Dh123.7 million in Q4 2015, a significant decrease of 28.2 per cent compared to the same quarter last year. Both digital cameras and interchangeable lenses have been affected by the lower consumer demand. Meanwhile, only Wi-Fi enabled SLR cameras registered a jump in revenue.

Considering the current consumer confidence levels a slow yet positive growth level is anticipated with seasonal highs of shopping festivals and events, which would be visible in coming months.
The Survey
GfK TEMAX® is an index developed to track the technical consumer goods markets. The findings are based on surveys carried out on a regular basis by GfK's retail panel. The retail panel comprises data from over 425,000 retail outlets worldwide. Since February 2009, GfK has also been compiling the GfK TEMAX® index at an international level in more than 30 countries. It is the first index that includes all of the markets for technical consumer goods in different countries.
