Kolkata: Just like those supple wrists that came into play late, gently nudging the ball between square leg and midwicket, the man with the inimitable swagger strode in during the slog overs and whipped up a clamour. The master craftsman was taking strike on a different pitch on Thursday, but the class was unmistakable.
Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, or Azhar bhaijaan, was in the Port area to campaign for Rakesh Singh, the alliance candidate who is taking on Trinamool's Firhad Hakim.
The flannels had given way to white kurta-pyjama, leather sandals and a kerchief to wipe the sweat on his forehead.
The pro started off with a cricketing parallel to drive home a political point and it worked with his fans. "Hit the Trinamool Congress for a six this time," said Azhar amid boisterous screeches.
By now, a meagre gathering of onlookers had supplemented manifold as the milky white SUV drove into Ekbalpore. Just like the stands at Eden Gardens, the stadium that has been 'lucky' for Azhar through his career, the narrow lane was stashed with people. Women perched on their verandahs to catch a glimpse of the bhaijaan.
"Trinamool was like a bad delivery that deceived the people of Bengal in 2011. But every good batsman goes backs to nets and practices to play the ball to which he got out. I am sure you have practiced. Hit them out of the ground this election," Azhar added.
There was stopping Azhar on Thursday, whose biopic will hit the screen soon. He continued: "If a batsman fails to score in five consecutive innings, selectors say isko khallas karo (remove him). Trinamool has scored a big duck in all the innings. Like in a cricket team, give opportunity to a new player," he said.

Rakesh is taking on Trinamool's heavyweight minister Firhad Hakim, one of the accused in Narada sting. Azhar could not help a cheeky retort, just like the quick singles between the wickets. "Do not vote for Hakim sahib. He only sits wearing specs. He does not do any work but only is only seen taking money in sting operations. Rakesh is a young guy. Give him a chance," Azhar urged.
The subtle humour like the wristy elegance was on display again. " Mujhe run out karake mat bhej dena. Mere candidate ko vote dena (Do not run me out. Vote for my candidate)" pat came the parting shot.
