HC rejects Congress leader's bail plea
Guwahati: The Gauhati high court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of tainted Congress leader Pranjit Choudhury who allegedly sexually exploited a postgraduate student after promising to marry her.
Choudhury, who contested the assembly election on a Congress ticket from Kamalpur seat in Kamrup district, landed in trouble when a 23-year-old woman lodged an FIR against him, alleging sexual abuse.
Public prosecutor Ziaur Kamar said, " Prima facie, the case has thrown up sufficient evidence against Choudhury."
The court observed there was nothing in the police case diary to show the victim had filed the FIR to injure or humiliate the accused. "At this stage, it can't be said it was a case of consensual sex," the order added.
The 39-year-old Congress leader has been absconding since police registered a case against him under Sections 376 (rape), 420 (cheating) and 313 of the IPC (causing miscarriage without woman's consent). tnn
