Surat: Two engineering students were arrested for alleged gangrape of a 20-year-old college girl from Daman.
Police arrested Haresh Kyara (20), of Surat and Bijoy Dharaiya (20), of Rajkot after examination of circumstantial evidence and questioning the accused. Earlier, police had detained 12 engineering students for questioning.
The survivor had lodged complaint with Nani Daman police station on April 24 alleging that she was raped by 11 engineering students.
She alleged that the boys first raped her at Bhimpore in Daman and later took her to Anand where she was again raped. The crime was committed on April 21 and April 22.
Following the complaint police had detained 12 persons of which 11 were engineering students. Since the accused were students police did not arrest them.
"We have arrested two accused based upon the preliminary investigation done so far. They will be produced in court on Friday," said Ravi Kumar Singh, sub-divisional police officer, Daman.
Police did not get any strong evidence against the other boys who were named in the survivor's complaints.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that the survivor had friendship with Haresh since last many months and they used to meet often. In their last meeting on April 21 and April 22 they developed some major differences after which the complainant alleged rape.
