Chandigarh: Since the imposition of education qualification for candidates contesting the municipal bodies' elections, Haryana will witness first civic polls on May 22. Earlier, the imposition of a similar condition for candidates contesting panchayat elections in January had created a political storm in the Haryana villages with women and youngsters getting prominence.
About a month back, the Haryana government had fixed Class X as the educational qualification for the general category candidates for civic body polls too.
Haryana election commissioner Rajiv Sharma on Thursday announced the election schedule for 15 municipal councils and 28 municipal committees of the state.
About 15 lakh voters would get to exercise their right to vote during the polls. The government claims that the new conditions on the candidates aim at strengthening the urban local bodies - the third tier of the governance - and improving the efficiency, transparency and accountability by making education as a necessary qualification for the office-bearers of these bodies.
The state election commissioner said that the election of these municipalities would be conducted by the use of EVMs, for which approximately 2,076 EVMs of single post would be used.
He said that model code of conduct has now come into force with immediate effect in the areas of municipal corporations, municipal councils and municipal committees where the polls would be conducted. He made it clear that no officer or official connected with the election work would be transferred till the completion of election process.
