Pune: A check on 73 criminals over 23 days has finally borne fruit when the city police cracked the sensational Katraj house break-in and murder case.
The accused, Sandeep Bhosale, killed Tanaji Nana Takale in the wee hours of April 3 when he was sleeping outside his house in Anjalinagar in Katraj.
Bhosale is involved in a case of dacoity and attempt to murder registered with the Dahiwadi police station in Satara.
He is also wanted in a case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and for murder attempt cases registered with Virar and Nalasapora police stations in Thane since 2008.
"The images of Sandeep alias Sandipa Bhosale (28) of Wadkinala near Saswad were caught on CCTV, but his whereabouts were not known. He had broken into Tanaji's house and three other houses the same night," said deputy commissioner of police (zone II) Pankaj Dahane.
A team under senior inspector Balasaheb Surve prepared a list of criminals involved in similar cases and launched a massive search in Pune, Ahmednagar and Satara districts. Bhosale's face was finally caught on a CCTV camera.
Bhosale, a native of Phaltan in Satara district, was arrested from his hideout in Wadkinala on Tuesday, following a tip off received by sub-inspector Uttam Budgude. His accomplice (name withheld) was also caught on a camera, but he is on the run, said Dahane.

Bhosale would kill the person if he woke up during burglary. Police have recovered a crow bar that Bhosale used to hit Tanaji Takale on his forehead. Bhosale had stolen two cellphones. He broke the locks of two more houses, but did not find anything worth stealing.
Tanaji's elder brother Shivaji, who stays in the adjacent house, had first seen him dead on the morning of April 4. Shivaji told the cops that Tanaji was alone in the house for over a month because his wife had gone to Solapur for delivery.
Tanaji would often sleep out to beat the heat. On the night of April 2, he locked his house and slept in the verandah. Shivaji told police he woke up midnight to answer nature's call and saw Tanaji's legs outside the mosquito net. He told Tanaji to put them in to save himself from mosquitoes. Around 7am, a neighbour knocked at Shivaji's door, but found the door latched from outside. He unbolt the door and Shivaji came out, only to find his brother lying dead.
