THE Mumbai Police’s Special Investigation Team that is probing the killing of a gangster in Mumbai by a team of the Gurgaon (Haryana) police has studied three video clips from the CCTV footage, which suggest that a weapon was planted on the man after he was killed at the door of his hotel room.

Sources in Mumbai Police said an FIR against nine persons was imminent. Sandeep Gadoli, a Gurgaon-based gangster, was shot dead by a team of the Gurgaon police at the Hotel Airport Metro near Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on February 7.

According to police sources, the clippings show two policemen at the door of the hotel room, not helping Gadoli who is seen writhing in pain on the floor for almost 20 minutes after being shot at, planting a weapon on him and destroying some CCTV cameras.

As many as 16 officers in four teams from the Mumbai Police Crime Branch are camping in Gurgaon at present, awaiting orders. “A team visited Gurgaon between April 18 and 23 too,” said a senior officer.

Gadoli, a wanted man with a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information about him, had checked into a ground floor room of the hotel along with his girlfriend while two accomplices were in a first floor room. An eight-member team led by Gurgaon police sub-inspector Pradhuman Yadav entered the hotel around 11 am and carried out the encounter. The Gurgaon police said later that they “retaliated with cross fire” when Gadoli fired at them.

Festive offer

Gadoli’s family had, however, alleged it was a fake encounter. That the Mumbai Police were not informed about the operation raised eyebrows too. Sources said the SIT had taken on record three CCTV clips. “The FSL has concluded that the clips are genuine and have not been doctored,” said a Mumbai Police officer.

In his statement to the SIT, Pradhuman Yadav had said, “Gadoli was alone in the room, lying on the bed. He took a pistol from under the pillow and fired at us. Seeing the threat to our lives, I fired two bullets at Gadoli from my revolver.”
