Ghaziabad: A woman and her daughter had a narrow escape when a fire broke out in their ninth floor flat in Gaur Green society on Thursday afternoon. Household items worth approximately Rs 12 lakh were destroyed in the fire.
The incident comes close on the heels of a chemical factory gutted in Udyog Kunj on Wednesday.
"At around 4.30 pm, we heard an explosion in flat number D 9030 on the ninth floor belonging to one Shaquib Rizvi.
Soon, the entire flat was engulfed in fire. We could see flames leaping from windows," said Jigyashu Pant, secretary, Gaur Green Society. "We raised an alarm and luckily the occupant Shaina Rizvi and her daughter rushed out well on time," he said.
The occupants Shaina and her daughter were sleeping in their bedroom when the fire started.
"We rushed two fire-tenders to the spot. The blaze was brought under control after nearly 45 minutes," said Ajay Sharma, fire safety officer.
"It seems a blast had occurred in the compressor of the air conditioner," said Sharma.
"There are six flats on the ninth floor and had we not reached on time, the fire would have spread to other flats also," he said.

Gaur Green society has 765 flats spread over eleven towers, each nine-storey tall. Each floor has six flats and nearly 2,000 residents live in the society.
Though there was no causality on Thursday, the issue has once again brought to light the fate of occupants in high-rise buildings in case of fire. There are nearly 200 towers in Vaishali, Indirapuram, Crossings Republik and Rajnagar Extension.
The fire-tenders in Ghaziabad can reach only upto 20 metres.
The department is still waiting for a hydraulic platform which can reach the top floors of high-rise buildings in case of fire.
