THE ORGAN donation of a 24-year-old braindead youth at PGI Thursday gave a new lease of life to five persons. With this donation, the PGI has harvested nine organs from two persons in two days, giving fresh hope to eight patients.

Sourab Duvedi, a resident of Nalagarh, had met with an accident Tuesday. According to the family, the deceased was initially taken to a local hospital, from where he was referred to PGI for treatment.

And on Thursday afternoon, the family of the deceased agreed to donate the organs of their son, who was working in a pharmaceutical company in Baddi.

PGI doctors said they met twice Wednesday to clear the case and around 3 pm, the deceased was declared braindead, following which in the evening they harvested corneas, pancreas, kidneys, and liver. The liver was sent to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) hospital in New Delhi and the other organs were used by PGI for five needy patients.

The family members gathered outside the operation theatre at the hospital described the deceased as a “religious” man. “He was a hope for the family. We don’t know what will happen to us without him,” said Sourab’s father Tilak Raj. “Organ donation is a noble cause and we are happy it will benefit other patients.”

Festive offer

Gaurav Duvedi, the brother of the deceased, said he (Sourab) had achieved a lot in a short span of time in the company where he was working.

According to PGI doctors, the corneas of the deceased were used in two recipients, while one pancreas and kidney went to one patient.

The liver was transported to Delhi, and another kidney too was used in PGI itself. “We created a green corridor to the airport and it took only 18 minutes to take the organ from PGI to the airport. It was then taken in a flight to New Delhi,” said Dr Vipin Kumar Kaushal, from the PGI’s department of hospital administration, who is also nodal officer of Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO).

PGI officials said the PGI director and medical superintendent monitored the entire process. An official added that help of the UT police was sought to create the green corridor.

Thursday’s donations came after the organ harvesting of a 18-year-old brain dead student, who was admitted to the hospital Monday. The hospital doctors successfully harvested pancreas, kidney and liver which were then transplanted in three recipients at the Institute only on Wednesday.

According to the PGI doctors, there is a growing awareness about organ donation among the people who are giving their consent for this noble cause. “These donations can help to save the lives of people who are waiting for organs. People should come forward and pledge the organs for this noble cause,” said Dr Kaushal.
