China's Communist Party anti-graft watchdog said on Wednesday that hundreds of employees working for the country's statistics bureau have been using data for personal gain, including collecting fees for providing information and other services.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said in a lengthy report that 313 employees in units under the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had been asked to return more than 3.2 million yuan ($493,000) in fees for the irregular provision of data services.

NBS republished the commission’s report on its official website.

The commission also found problems with purchase contracts for mobile data collection devices.

One of the issues involved the inclusion of more than 600,000 yuan of training fees in an equipment purchase contract, the commission said.

The former head of the NBS, Wang Bao’an, was fired in January after authorities announced an anti-corruption investigation.
