A sewage treatment plant was inaugurated at Cancer Institute, Adyar, on Thursday. The plant, set up on the Gandhi Nagar campus, was donated to the institute by V A Tech Wabag, a water and wastewater treatment plant supplier.
Thanking the company, V. Shanta, chairperson, Cancer Institute, Adyar said that in order for the institute to be accredited under the NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers), the installation of the sewage treatment plant was mandatory. Stressing the importance of reusing water, Dr. Shanta said the institute discharges 2.5 lakh litres of treated water on a daily basis, a portion of which was used for landscaping and gardening. “ As of today, we spend Rs. 75 – 80 lakh annually on buying water,” she said.
The 180-sq. m sewage treatment plant, explained V.K. Kumaran of Wabag, would treat sewage from various facilities of the institute. While a portion of the treated water would be used for horticulture, the rest would be discharged.
S. Varadarajan, director and chief growth officer of the company, also spoke.
