Chandigarh, April 28

Acting on a petition filed by the Ludhiana Auto Rickshaw Association, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the cancellation of maxi cab permits granted to auto rickshaws within a month.

A Division Bench of the High Court also made it clear that maxi cab permits would not be issued to auto rickshaws. At the same time, the Bench made it clear that the registration of vehicles may be continued.

Counsel for the petitioner Sardavinder Goyal had earlier argued that permit had been issued to the auto rickshaws in Punjab under the garb of maxi cab permits. But auto rickshaws did not fall under the definition of maxi cabs.

He added same auto rickshaws were registered as cab taxis with a seating capacity of six in Ludhiana; and three-wheeler with a seating capacity of four in the entire state except in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar.

He contended otherwise also it was not safe to allow plying of auto rickshaws on the highways.
