2002 Gulberg society case: Second accused jumps parole

According to the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), which probed the case, Ranip police station officials were alerted by the jail authorities after Lallu didn’t return on April 8.

More than two months after a key accused in the 2002 Gulberg Society massacre case jumped parole, another accused has been missing for the past two weeks.

In the first case, it has been learnt, accused Kailash Lalchand Dhobi has written to the Gujarat High Court that he would return only after verdict in the case, which is expected next month. In the latest incident, co-accused Shivcharan Ramjilal Nath alias Jitendra alias Lallu jumped parole earlier this month after the High Court on March 31 extended his interim bail for a week and asked him to return to Sabarmati Central Jail on April 8. He was granted relief for treatment of his wife.

According to the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), which probed the case, Ranip police station officials were alerted by the jail authorities after Lallu didn’t return on April 8. Officials said that on April 30 the trial court is likely to declare him absconding.

Booked by the SIT in 2008, Lallu remained absconding till 2010 when he was finally nabbed and sent to Sabarmati Jail. Earlier, Dhobi — who was in the jail for nearly 14 years — did not return to the prison on January 22 after his parole period ended. On January 25, the High Court had rejected his plea for extension of temporary bail.

Sources close to Dobhi said that he has written a letter to the High Court, saying he would only return after announcement of the verdict.

Lallu and Dhobi are among the 66 accused the Gulberg Society massacre in which 69 people, including former Congress MP Ahsan Jafri, were killed.
