Anirban Bhattacharya, the JNU student who was recently rusticated for organising an event on Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s death anniversary on February 9, has been served a show-cause for allegedly participating in a movie-screening on the Muzaffarnagar riots nine months ago.

“A complaint against you was received in Chief Proctor’s office in August, 2015. It has been alleged that you were involved in participation in screening of a documentary-film ‘Muzaffarnagar abhi baqi hai’ without permission of the administration near Godvari dhaba,” the notice read.

The movie was shown last year in August by the Democratic Students’ Federation after the university stopped the screening, saying no permission was sought. Some members of DSF were served a notice last year and the issue was resolved, said Lenin, former JNUSU president.

ABVP had protested against the screening of the documentary on the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots in JNU. ABVP had earlier stalled the screening of the documentary in Delhi University.

However, Bhattacharya, who does not belong to DSF, was served a notice on Wednesday. “You are directed to appear before the Proctor on May 4 and explain your position in this regard. You may also bring your evidence which you may wish to submit in your defence,” it said.

Reacting to the show-cause notice served to him nine months after the event, Bhattacharya said on Facebook, “There was an unfamiliar knock on the door. I was anticipating that they may come any time demanding that I vacate my hostel room as per the farcical order of rustication. But as I opened the door, I was honoured with, guess what, yet another notice from the proctor’s office.”

University officials were not available for a comment.

Bhattacharya along with JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid was arrested in a sedition case in connection with the February 9 event in which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised. The three are out on bail now.

JNU has fined Kanhaiya Rs 10,000 and rusticated Khalid and Bhattacharya. He has also been debarred from taking up any course or entering the campus for five years after July 25.
