Layman Filly Hits the Spot In the Allez France

Marypop | Scoop Dyga

Stepping into black-type company for the first time when a nose second in the Listed Prix de Liancourt over 10 1/2 furlongs at Longchamp in September, Marypop was fourth back there in the G2 Prix de Royallieu at a mile and a half on Arc weekend before returning to win the Apr. 3 Listed Prix Zarkava with authority back over the former trip at Saint-Cloud. Keen initially before being held up in mid-division, the lightly-raced chestnut was left with a lot of ground to make up in the straight but stayed on strongly when in the clear to gain the lead with 100 metres remaining as Nymeria emerged out of the pack. Disappointment of the race was the returning 19-10 favourite We Are (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), who faded out of the thick of the action in the last quarter mile to be only 10th. “She's been improving since her 3-year-old days and won very nicely,” winning trainer Pia Brandt said. “Some of my horses have been sick, but she passed all the pre-race tests. The G2 Prix Corrida [at Saint-Cloud May 29] is the obvious next step, but we'll see as she's been bought to race in America.”
