You have a business lunch coming up and countless questions are running through your mind: How do I ensure I'm a good host? How do I show off my knowledge of food and drink without being a showoff? How do I take care of business while keeping the atmosphere enjoyable?

It may not seem easy at first, but once you've mastered the essentials of business lunch etiquette, you'll be able to conduct meetings and close deals over a nice bottle of wine and a delicious meal like a boss. Here are a few pointers:

-Select a venue based on budget, guests, meeting type: If you are hosting a meeting, you will have the venue planned in advance, so it's not necessary to ask your guests for suggestions on where to go.

However, when selecting a venue, it is important to understand both your guests and the context of the meeting. It's imperative to keep in mind location, noise-level, menu and the amount of time you'll need to accomplish the purpose of the meeting.

-Handling the drinks menu: When it's time to order drinks, let your guests order theirs first. If you see that a guest is hesitant to make a decision, take charge and order a round of drinks for the table.

-Food ordering etiquette: In terms of ordering, remember that you will continually have restaurant staff approaching the table and making interruptions until you have placed the order. It is important to place a food order as soon as possible. This is why, if the restaurant calls for it, you should usually take charge of ordering food to be shared (family-style) by the table, as long as you've ensured there are no allergies or dietary restrictions with any of the guests.

-Handling the bill: When it comes to the bill, if you are hosting, you should take care of it. The best way to do this is to ensure the server knows that you are the host and that the bill is to be presented only to you.

If you have been invited as a guest to a meeting, you are right to expect that the host will have a clear idea of how he wants to handle the bill. As you don't want to overstep, you will let him or her take the lead, but also be prepared to step up if there seems to be any hesitation.
