Silchar-Lumding rail section blocked again
Silchar: Rail communication to the Barak Valley and Tripura was snapped again, the second time since last Saturday, after fresh landslides triggered by heavy downpour at Phiding in Dima Hasao district in the Lumding-Silchar hills section blocked the tracks on Wednesday morning.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) authorities immediately rolled back a couple of trains which were en route through the affected section.
Services of all the other trains have also been controlled.
Railway engineers and workers are engaged in clearing the debris. An official said train services on this route remain uncertain because of inclement weather conditions. "It will take at least five to seven days to regularize train services on this route," a source said.
A senior NFR official said, "Soil, mud, boulders and trees came down the Barail hill on the track. We were compelled to bring back the Guwahati-Silchar and Silchar-Guwahati Fast Passenger trains. They had already departed from their source stations on early Wednesday morning. This has been a cause of great harrassment of the passengers."
NFR general manager HK Jaggi said the railways has been fighting against the odds of nature to keep trains running in the hill section. "The very heavy rainfall has become hurdle in smooth running of trains, but we will continue the fight. We understand that it is a tough task," he said.
Over the week, Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express trains were derailed twice in this section due to bad weather. Authorities were compelled to regularize and control a number of trains on this route which runs through Barail hill in the Dima Hasao district of Assam.

NFR CPRO Pranav Jyoti Sharma said that Guwahati-Silchar Fast Passenger, which had started its journey from Guwahati on Tuesday, was short-terminated at Lumding and returned to Guwahati. The Silchar-Guwahati Fast Passenger, which had started its journey from Silchar on Wednesday, was short-terminated at Mahur and returned to Silchar.
The Guwahati-Silchar Kanchenjungha Express, scheduled to leave Guwahati on April 28, and the Silchar-Guwahati Kanchenjungha Express, scheduled to leave Silchar on April 29, will remained cancelled, the CPRO said. He added that the Guwahati-Silchar Fast Passenger, scheduled to leave Guwahati on April 27, and Silchar-Guwahati Fast Passenger, scheduled to leave Silchar on April 28, will also remain cancelled.
Resumption of services will be notified later, Sharma said.
