Gangster killed in Basti, cop injured in cross-fire

The deceased gangster, Ram Kumar Yadav, was facing 13 criminal cases. Superintendent of Police, Basti, K P Singh said Yadav had recently issued life threats to a brick kiln owner while making an extortion call for Rs 5 lakh.

A gangster who was wanted in a murder case was killed while a police sub-inspector was injured during cross-firing between a police team and a gang in Chhawni police station area in Basti district on Wednesday.

The deceased gangster, Ram Kumar Yadav, was facing 13 criminal cases. Superintendent of Police, Basti, K P Singh said Yadav had recently issued life threats to a brick kiln owner while making an extortion call for Rs 5 lakh. The businessman, a resident of Faizabad, had lodged a complaint against him with the police.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from Chhawni police station rushed to Gauriya Nayan village on Wednesday morning to nab the gang of criminals, who were later spotted near Saryu river, Singh said. As the cops tried to move towards them, the miscreants spotted them and opened fire. The police team too fired back in retaliation. During the exchange of fire, sub-inspector Aditya Kumar Yadav suffered a bullet injury on his thigh in the incident, the SP said, adding that his condition was currently stable.

While police were able to arrest three of Yadav’s associates — Dharmendra Kumar, Raj Kumar and Kamlesh Kumar, Yadav was found injured. He was taken to the district hospital where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival, Singh said.

Police claimed to have recovered four country-made firearms from gang’s possession.
