Sewer work incomplete, AMC flooded with citizen plaints

Allahabad: The project of laying of sewer lines across the city started in October last year when the main road of Civil Lines was dug up. The private agency entrusted with the task laid the sewer lines and left the work midway after levelling the road with mud. As per Ganga Pollution Control Unit, work is on in 12 localities across the city.
Mayor Abhilasha Gupta accepted that Allahabad Municipal Corporation is receiving complaints on a daily basis over the apathy shown by the private agency.

"A meeting with officials of Ganga Pollution Control Unit, Jal Nigam and corporation officials will be convened to ensure that grievances are redressed. The agency was entrusted to reconstruct roads after digging and laying the sewer but it has failed to do so," she said. Rs 300 crore has been sanctioned for the project.
Social activist Kamlesh Singh said, "AMC should have acted as a monitoring agency. In places, the work was completed a month ago but since it wasn't monitored, residents are at the mercy of the private agency. Commuters sustaining injuries due to accidents has become a routine on such roads."
As the digging continues, latest figures from Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) show the level of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) in the air has increased to 300.5 microgram per cubic metre in February in Johnstonganj.
It was over five times more than the permissible limit of 60 microgram per cubic metre.
In Civil Lines, SPM recorded near Bharat Yantra Nigam was 260 microgram per cubic metre, around 4.5 time more. tnn
