Second BRTS corridor to take off today, activists slam move in Pune

Mayura Shendekar, who heads the PMPML’s BRTS cell, the operating agency in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, said on Wednesday that the BRTS is already catering to over 1.2 lakh passengers daily on the Pune-Alandi Road corridor.

Pune division’s fourth and Pune city’s second Bus Rapid Transit System-the Yerawada-Wagholi corridor-on Nagar Road would be inaugurated on Thursday. This is the second corridor on PMC terrain after the Pune-Alandi Road corridor. However, civic activists have taken strong objection to the move, alleging that it is ‘incomplete and accident-prone’.

Mayura Shendekar, who heads the PMPML’s BRTS cell, the operating agency in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, said on Wednesday that the BRTS is already catering to over 1.2 lakh passengers daily on the Pune-Alandi Road corridor. She said the survey showed that at least 11 per cent of the commuters on the three corridors operational in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad have changed from using motorcycles and cars to the ‘Rainbow BRT’. There is a 12 per cent increase in passenger intake on the Pune-Alandi Road Corridor and 20 per cent increase on the two Pimpri-Chinchwad corridors.

Commuter satisfaction rating is 74 out of 100 which is much higher than the previous PMPML service rating of 53 out of 100, Shendekar said. This points to greater public acceptance of the system due to improved facilities and a more reliable service.

However, actvists said there is no need to hurry and it is more important to get the infrastructure on the BRTS route in order. “The Yerawada-Wagholi BRTS route is fraught with danger. Only on Wednesday morning, a car hit a pedestrian which could be due to a broken divider,” said Jugal Rathi of PMP Pravasi Manch.

Rathi said the ITMS (Intelligent Traffic Management System) has not been installed ‘fully’ on the stretch. “PMPML has been claiming that ITMS has been installed on the route. However, the work is incomplete and it raises the issues of safety,” he said. “The PMPML had said that there would be uninterrupted power supply on the corridor. However, this aspect has not been settled so far. As a result, bus doors may not get closed automatically resulting in accidents,” he added.

Festive offer

The 14-km long Nagar Road BRTS has 13 BRT stations on the segregated 7.86 km section from Yerwada to Aaple Ghar, and 25 bus routes including Wadgaon Sheri, Viman Nagar, Khulewadi, Shubham Society, Chandan Nagar and Kharadi, besides providing connectivity to Pune railway station, Swargate and Warje Malwadi. Five long distance routes to Sangvi Sandas, Karandigaon/ Kendurgaon, Wade Bolhai, Markal and Wadegaon/ Kesnand would now terminate at the proposed Wagholi terminal.
