MANGALURU: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has bagged the newly formed Kotekaru and Vittal town panchayat (TP), elections to which were held on Sunday. The BJP bagged the 17-member Kotekaru TP bagging nine seats. Its principal opposition, the Congress had to be content with four seats. While two independents too made their entry in to the panchayat, the Communist Party of India (M), Socialist Democrati Party of India bagged one seat each.

In the elections held to 18-member Vittal TP, the BJP bagged 2/3rds majority winning 12 seats and Congress had to be contend with the rest. K Pratap Simha Nayak, president of district unit of BJP thanked the workers and voters who aided the resounding win of party candidates in the elections.
However, the Congress had cause for cheer when it managed to stave of the BJP in Udupi district winning the newly created Kaup TP. Congress won 12 out the 23 seats on offer, leaving BJP with 11 seats. Kaup TMC was created by merging Kaup and its surrounding villages. Voting held on Sunday saw 74.23 percent of the 16,491 voters exercise their franchise. Vinay Kumar Sorake, Udupi district in-charge minister thanked the voters for reposing faith in the Congress.
