An under-construction toilet on the jail premises provided rampaging inmates enough bricks to throw at the policemen, said SP Prabhakar Chowdhary.

To control the situation, police had to fire in air, use water cannons and cane charge the unruly prisoners.

The incident took place early morning shortly after the routine parade, said the SP.

Jail superintendent Rang Bahadur Patel, who reached the spot after hearing the news, was chased away by the rampaging inmates.

The injured have been admitted to the district hospital where condition of one of the constables is said to be critical.

While the situation is under control, heavy police force has been deployed on the jail premises.

District magistrate Aneeta Shrivastava said security personnel from five police station and PAC men were rushed to control the situation.
