Ludhiana: Democratic frontrunner for the US presidential election Hillary Clinton made a lot of heads turn during the presidential primaries in New York last week when she gave up her classic black and blue jacket and put on something more exotic. She put on a jacket of pure merino woven fabric worn over khaki pants and most of the fashionistas had no clue where the new look came from.
A couple of magazines even wondered where that bright, multi-coloured paisley look came from.
It no w turns out that the jacket has a strong India connect. So, while Republican frontrunner Donald Trump was busy mocking the Indian accent, the former secretary of state was dressed in a jacket designed by Ludhianvi Juhi Kilachand, a fashion designer living in New York since 2000. Interestingly, even the fabric for the outfit was manufactured by Ludhiana-based Shingora Shawls owned by Mridula Jain.
It is unlikely that Clinton was aware of the jacket's Indian origin or that she was mocking Trump by putting it on, but it left both the women with a sense of pride all the same. In fact, both Juhi and Mridula were taken by surprise when they saw Clinton in their creation on social media.
Speaking to TOI on phone, Juhi said, "This is nothing less than world class honour for me. "
A jubilant Mridula said: "The fabric was exclusively manufactured by us and supplied to Juhi's company some time back. Thirty years of hard labour seem to have borne some fruit."
Shingora Shawls is one of the biggest exporters of designer shawls in India with 90% of its products selling in overseas markets like Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Japan.
