Tribhuvan and Kailash to make way for a multiplex

Come Thursday, it will be curtains for two iconic cinemas of Bengaluru. Tribhuvan and Kailash, which have seen many a blockbuster lighting up their single screens, will close down and eventually make way for a multiplex.

This marks the latest in a series of closures of single-screen theatres in Bengaluru to make way for multiplexes.

Jnaneshwara Aithal, the lease-holder of the two theatres, confirmed that the 7.30 p.m. shows on Thursday will be the last. Tribhuvan will screen Lal Rang while it will be Last Bus at Kailash. He said, “The two theatres will be closed. Demolition of the building will commence on Friday. We have applied for permission to construct a multiplex.”

The theatres are located on K.G. Road in Gandhinagar, the hub of Kannada film activities. They were constructed in 1974. Srinivasa Kalyana , starring Rajkumar, was the first film screened in Tribhuvan while Aandhi , starring Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen directed by Gulzar, was the first film to be screened in Kailash. Sampattige Sawal, starring Rajkumar, hit the 100-day mark in this theatre.
