AIADMK Election Wing secretary and former Minister P.Kannan on Tuesday said he did not aspire to become Chief Minister and would rather focus on striving hard for the party to come to power in the Union Territory in the Assembly elections.

Addressing reporters here, Mr. Kannan said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa’s speech during the election campaign in Puducherry was a turning point in the politics of Union Territory. He also said her speech put a full stop to rumours spread by a section purporting that the AIADMK would form an alliance in the UT.

Mr. Kannan added that in earlier occasion, he mooted to the party supremo that the party should contest alone and said he felt elated when Ms. Jayalalithaa ruled out any alliance and declared that the party would contest in all 30 constituencies of UT.

Replying to a question on chief ministership in Puducherry, Mr. Kannan said party general secretary would decide later and quickly added that no party in Puducherry had announced its chief ministerial candidate in UT.

“I joined the party without an agenda of getting Chief Ministership or even a Minister’s post. I should become an MLA and pave the way for the party to capture the power here in Puducherry. I have no dream of becoming Chief Minister. The AIADMK alone can relieve the people from the suffering,” said Mr. Kannan.

Recalling the poll promise of Ms.Jayalalithaa, Mr. Kannan said she vouchsafed that if voted to power, the party would lead the UT to development within five years. He pointed out that since the party has 49 MPs, they would impress upon on the Centre to get required assistance and welfare measures to UT.
