The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has launched a drive to make the city open defecation free.

Belagavi: The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has launched a drive to make the city open defecation free.
Taking the first step in the direction, officials are creating awareness among slum-dwellers and residents of other backward areas.
Officials are interacting with residents who don't have toilet facilities at home and have to relieve themselves in the open.
Those who possess land are being advised to construct toilets; they will be sanctioned funds worth Rs 15,000.
Armed with application forms, officials are going from door to door to get more and more people on board.
The BCC will build public toilets for those who don't own land. Areas in the city like Ambedkar Nagar, Rohidas Nagar, Rajaram Nagar, Angol, New Gandhi Nagar, Old Gandhi Nagar, Shrinagar, Konchi Koravi Colony, Vantamuri Ashray Colony, Kanbargi, Sagar Colony, Rukmini Nagar, Alarwad Ashray Colony are being covererd under the drive.
After the first step, the BCC commissioner will assess how many families need toilets and how many applications have been filled. For effective implementation, the commissioner has formed 12 teams, of which the best will be awarded under the Swachh Bharat mission.
The Centre rewards urban local bodies who have shown the way in making areas open defection free. "We had not taken it seriously till now. Our objective is to ensure that every home has a toilet and we hope to achieve it soon," said G Prabhu, BCC commissioner.
