Woman’s body in Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus restroom: Police waiting for forensic test reports

Nazia Khatun (28) along with her husband Ziaur Rehman (35) had checked into the retiring room at the railway guesthouse after arriving in Mumbai on Friday by the Madgaon Express.

After they were found unconscious in their room, both were rushed to St George Hospital on Saturday afternoon where Khatun was declared brought dead.

The autopsy details into the death of Nazia indicated death due to poisoning.

“Samples of stomach content, intestine, liver, spleen and nails have been taken for forensic analysis. Nail samples will be checked to see if there is any food particle in them that may be poisonous,” said an expert attached with the autopsy.

Nazia and Ziaur had consumed biryani from the pantry of the Madgaon Express on Friday before spending the night at the retiring room of CST.

On Saturday, she had vomited and was found unconscious. The room had also undergone a pest control days before the couple visited it.

According to her post-mortem findings, chances of death due to inhalation of poisonous fumes are thin.

“If she had inhaled something poisonous, her lungs would be in a congested condition. But on observation, there was no suffocation or congestion marks in the lungs,” the expert said.

Forensic analysis report is now awaited to confirm food poisoning due to the biryani, although the stomach showed no colourisation indicative of any poison.

Manik Sathe, Senior Police Inspector at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Government Railway Police (GRP), said, “We will not be able to conclude on any statement till final details of the autopsy are out. Our investigation process is on in this matter.”

Amitabh Ojha, Divisional Railway Manager, Central Railways added, “We will wait for the completion of investigation by the Government Railway Police.”
