Surrey v Somerset

Just a day after becoming the second-highest run-getter for Somerset, Marcus Trescothick went on to register a fine hundred. However that wasn't enough to stop Somerset from concedng a 90-run first innings lead to Surrey. Trescothick apart, none of the top-order batsmen made any impact and it was left to the lower middle-order to salvage some pride. The chief architect of the Surrey's bowling efforts was Ravi Rampaul, who bagged a five-wicket haul after a foot injury to Mark Footitt.

Brief Scores: Surrey 463( Kumar Sangakkara 171, Jason Roy 85, Tim Groenewald 5/68) lead Somerset 353 (Marcus Trescothick 137, Ravi Rampaul 5/85) by 90 runs.

Middlesex v Durham

No play was possible on day three due to the poor weather that saw the game being interrupted by rain and even snowfall later on. That could also signal the end of the game at Chester-le-street with Durham reacting with a strong reply to Middlesex's 389.

Brief Scores: Durham 295/4 (Mark Stoneman 139*, Jack Burnham 61; Steve Finn 3-64) trail Middlesex 389 (Ben Stokes 4-80) by 94 runs.

Warwickshire v Yorkshire

Yorkshire added just 11 more to their overnight score to finish with 379. In reply, opener Varun Chopra scored a brisk ton that led a strong reply by the hosts. Chopra remained unbeaten on 101, in a knock that included 14 fours. Giving Chopra good company was Ian Bell with 59 as the duo racked up a 132-run stand for the second wicket. Warwickshire ended the day still trailing by 174 runs but with eight wickets in the bank, and two well-set batsmen at the crease.

Brief Scores: Yorkshire 379 (Gary Ballance 68, Adil Rashid 63, Steven Patterson 63, Chris Woakes 4/87) lead Warwickshire 205/1 (Varun Chopra 101*, Ian Bell 59) by 174 runs.

Gloucestershire v Worcestershire

Chris Dent's unbeaten 81 helped Gloucestershire stretch their lead to 186 at the close of play in Bristol against Worcestershire. The 25-year-old hit ten fours in his 175-ball knock and would be looking to add a few more vital runs to set a stiff target in the final innings.

The home side were once cruising at 157 for two at one stage in their second innings before Matt Henry's three-wicket burst reduced them to 217 for 6. Earlier in the day, Worcestershire were dismissed for 411 in their first innings, gaining a slender 31-run lead. Henry's quickfire 40-ball 42 proved to be decisive for the visitors.

Brief scores: Gloucestershire 380 & 217/6 (Chris Dent 81*, Ian Cockbain 67, Matt Henry 3-60) lead Worcestershire 411 (Joe Clarke 135, Moeen Ali 74, David Payne 3-89) by 186 runs

Derbyshire v Glamorgan

Former Derbyshire skipper Wayne Madsen scored a brisk 97 and shared a 101-run stand for the third wicket with opener Ben Slater as hosts Derbyshire quickly ate into Glamorgan's first innings lead. However, Michael Hogan and Andrew Salter picked up three wickets apiece, including those of the two well-set batsmen, to reduce the hosts to 289 for 9. An unbeaten 42-run stand for the final wicket between Andy Carter and wicketkeeper Tom Poynton gave Derbyshire another point. If the two can add another 19 runs, the hosts could end up with another first innings point.

Brief Scores: Glamorgan 377 (William Bragg 129, Aneurin Donald 45, Tony Palladino 5-83) lead Derbyshire 331/9 (Wayne Madsen 97, Ben Slater 62; M Hogan 3-65, A Salter 3-56) by 46 runs.

Essex v Northamptonshire

Jamie Porter starred with seven wickets on the third day's play at Chelmsford as Essex tightened the noose around Northamptonshire in their second division county match. The 22-year-old pacer exploited the overcast conditions on offer to take a five-fer in the first innings as the visitors folded for 119 in response to Essex's first-innings score of 441 for 8 decl. Only Adam Rossington (67) offered any semblance of resistance. The hosts enforced the follow on and although Northamptonshire performed marginally better, thanks to a 58 from opener Ben Duckett, Ryan Ten Doeschate's Essex side are only six-wickets away from an outright win.

Earlier in the day, Northamps medium-pacer Ben Sanderson completed a five-wicket haul but not before Essex's lower-order pushed the total to 441.

Brief Scores: Essex 441/8 (Ravi Bopara 76, Alastair Cook 65; B Sanderson 5-108) lead Northamptonshire 119 (Adam Rossington 67; Jamie Porter 5-46) & 148/4 (f/o) (Ben Duckett 58, Richard Levi 28*; Jamie Porter 2-39, G Napier 2-38) by 174 runs.

Leicestershire v Kent

Leicestershire took control of their fixture against Kent despite the possibility of only 45 overs in the day's play. After Zak Chappell picked up the final two wickets to bowl Kent out for 264, the hosts found themselves at a precarious 15 for 2 as both openers departed cheaply. Captain Mark Cosgrove and Neil Dexter composed an unbeaten 159-run stand to end the day at 174 for 2. Cosgrove's unbeaten 99 came off just 106 deliveries and included 19 fours. He will look to complete his hundred early tomorrow as the hosts look to pick up as many first innings points as possible.

Brief Scores: Kent 264 (Daniel Bell-Drummond 124, Adam Rouse 38; Clint Mckay 3-66, Wayne White 2-37) lead Leicestershire 174/2 (Mark Cosgrove 99*, Neil Dexter 58*; Darren Stevens 1-54) by 90 runs.
