Gurpreet Singh Sandhu Creates History, Becomes First Indian Footballer To Lead European Top Division Team

In what comes as a big boost for Indian football, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is the first player from the country to be chosen as captain of a top division team in Europe.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper plays for Norwegian Tippeligaen club Stabaek.

He made the announcement on Twitter after it was confirmed.

He made more than 100 appearances for East Bengal between 2010 and 2014 before going to Stabek for a trial. Prior to his stint with East Bengal, Gurpreet also spent a year on loan at Pailan Arrows. He was soon offered a contract at the Norwegian club thanks to his impressive performances, which he signed in August 2014.

Gurpreet is the fifth Indian player to play professionally in Europe after Mohammed Salim, Baichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri and Subrata Paul.
