TV tonight: 'Limitless,' 'Night Manager' miniseries
Grandfathered
Fox, 8:30 ET/PT
Backstories get filled in on this sweet outing of Grandfathered, as we learn why Gerald went looking for his father — and why Jimmy was ready, for the first time in his life, to embrace a father-son relationship. Paul Sorvino guest stars as Jimmy’s dad, but the real draws here are the strong regular cast, led by John Stamos, Paget Brewster and (especially in this episode) Kelly Jenrette, who gets some of the night’s best lines.
Limitless
CBS, 10 ET/PT
This very pleasant surprise, which has grown into one of CBS’s best procedurals, ends its first season with Brian (Jake McDorman, another pleasant surprise) struggling to stop Sands. Here’s hoping he succeeds, and that the finale is a move toward clearing the series of everything attached to Senator Morra — a movie-holdover crutch the show no longer needs. Assuming, of course, it's renewed — so fingers crossed on that one.
The Night Manager
AMC, 10 ET/PT
Having established the main characters and their motivations, this terrific — and terrifically entertaining — miniseries now sets them all in motion, as Angela (Olivia Colman) prepares Pine (Tom Hiddleston) to infiltrate Roper’s (Hugh Laurie) operation. All three stars are at their considerable best, but should that not be enough of a draw, throw in a taut script, excellent direction by Susanne Bier, and some truly stunning scenery.
