Surat: Eleven engineering students in Vallabh Vidyanagar have been detained for allegedly gang-raping a 20-year-old girl in Daman.
The suspects, who belong to Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Surat and Vadodara cities, were picked up from the education town on Monday following a complaint lodged by the rape survivor. Medical examination of the girl has confirmed sexual assault.
The girl has alleged that she was gang-raped for two days on April 21 and 22 in Daman and Anand.
The students came in contact with the girl through social media photo sharing platform Instagram.
The survivor, who is also a college student in Daman, approached Nani Daman police on Sunday and lodged a complaint against the 11 boys. "Since the suspects are students, we are carefully investigating the allegations. They will be arrested only after in-depth questioning," said Eish Singhal, superintendent of police, Daman.
"The girl has alleged that she was kidnapped in a car on April 21 and raped in Bhimpore locality of Daman. Later, she was taken to Vallabh Vidyanagar on April 22 where she was allegedly raped in a rented apartment," Singhal said, adding that she was also threatened of dire consequences.
Police are verifying details of the places in Bhimpore and Anand named by the survivor.
