We’ll find solution to sharing water on ‘give and take’ basis: CM

April 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - BELAGAVI:

The State government will explore ways to find a permanent solution to share Krishna waters with Maharashtra to meet the drinking water needs during summer on a “give and take” basis, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said. In his concluding remarks at the end of a nearly three-hour meeting with elected representatives and officials convened to take stock of drought-relief measures taken up in the district at the Central Hall of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha here on Monday, he said that the government had been purchasing water for summer requirements in the Krishna basin areas in Belagavi district and adjoining areas of North Karnataka every year.

He said that both Maharashtra and Karnataka required around 4 tmcft water from the Krishna for drinking purposes. Maharashtra requires 4 tmcft water from the Almatti dam to meet drinking water needs in Jat, Akkalkot and Solapur. The same quantity of water is required for North Karnataka districts. This mutual requirement of water could be solved on a “give and take” basis free, a suggestion that has been made by MLA Laxman Savadi.

“We will discuss the issue with our counterparts soon,” the Chief Minister promised.

The Chief Minister, who got a positive response from his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis when he called him over phone in the afternoon seeking release of 3 tmcft of water into the Krishna, said a letter had been sent to the Maharashtra Chief Minister.

Also, an appointment has been sought for an all-party delegation to meet Mr. Fadnavis and request him to release 2 tmcft or 3 tmcft water at a time so that it could reach the tail-end areas in the river basin facing acute drinking water shortage.
