The 16th water train – christened Jaldoot by the railways and the state administration – left from Miraj for Latur late on Monday evening, with the precious cargo of 25 lakh litres of water. With this trip, the water train for Latur project has seen 22 million litres of water being transported from Miraj to the parched town in Marathwada in the last 15 days.

According to AK Tiwari, senior divisional operations manager, Pune railway, the rakes during the first nine trips were 10-coach combinations. From the 10th trip onwards, the rake has been going as a full 50-wagon train. The first full 50-wagon trip was on April 19, while the first trip of this rake with 10 wagons was on April 11. Each wagon has a capacity of about 54,000 litres, though for operational reasons, the wagons are being filled with 50,000 litres.

"The plan is to have a full trip every day since we have two full 50-wagon rakes," said Tiwari. Pune railway officials also had a meeting with the Sangli administration, led by collector Shekhar Gaikwad, on Friday, to streamline the process further, so that more time could be taken out for the maintenance of the two rakes.

Railway officials said the trips will go on right up till June or till such time as the monsoon arrives. Currently, it takes 7 hours for the rake to reach Latur from Miraj, another three to four hours to unload the water, and then 6 hours for the rake to get back to Miraj.

Train's load just 2.4% of water wasted in Mumbai in a day

While 22 million litres of water has been transported to Latur by train in 15 days, the appalling fact is that this is just about 2.4% of 900 million litres of water that is wasted in Mumbai every single day. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had said in the legisltaive assembly on April 12 that about 27%, or 900 milion litres, of water supplied to Mumbai gets wasted due to leakage and other technical problems.
