Chennai: Trapped victims rescued after four-hour struggle

Four reportedly died on the spot while another succumbed later in the hospital.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Fire Rescue Personnel from Tiruvallur and Poonmallee were pressed into the rescue. After an ordeal of about 4 hours, all those trapped inside were taken out and moved to Tiruvallur Government hospital, Kilpauk Government hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Four reportedly died on the spot while another succumbed later in the hospital. The deceased were identified as M. Dasarathan (58), his wife Angammal (45), son Jeeva (17), his nephew Thyagarajan (26) and the latter’s son Madesh (2).
Thyagu works as a driver while Jeeva is awaiting his class XII results.

Dasarathan’s brothers Ramakrishnan, and Vimalakannan, Vimalakannan’s wife Amaraavathi, and her son Praveen, and septuagenarian Yasodha were injured.
The lorry, which was carrying iron rolls from the Tata Steel facility in Jamshedpur, was heading to Hyundai’s ancillary company making body covers and located in Irungattukottai when the mishap occurred.

The lorry had two drivers on the job. Which driver was at the wheels at the time of the accident is yet to be ascertained. The logistics firm had shared the mobile numbers of both drivers but their numbers remained switched off since the report of the incident.

Meanwhile, residents resorted to a road roko for about 3 hours demanding compensation and were pacified by the cops. The bodies were handed over to the families following post-mortem examinations.
