BJP to field Dinakar, Sheela Shetty for top posts in Udupi ZP

April 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - Udupi:

The Udupi district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen Dinakar and Sheela K. Shetty for the posts of the president and the vice-president of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat.

The post of the panchayat president is reserved for Scheduled Castes and that of the vice-president for a woman from general category. The elections to these posts will be held here on April 27.

In a press release issued here on Monday, T.V. Hegde, president of the district unit of the BJP, said that the party had finalised these two persons for the top posts of the zilla panchayat.

The BJP will have a smooth sailing in the elections to these posts as it has bagged 20 of the 26 seats in the zilla panchayat as against the six seats won by the Congress.

Mr. Dinakar, who won from Udyavar Zilla Panchayat Constituency, belongs to Scheduled Castes. There is no other candidate from his caste. Hence, Mr. Dinakar’s election is a foregone conclusion.

Though 10 women zilla panchayat members from the BJP were eligible for the post of the vice-president, the party has chosen veteran leader Ms. Shetty for the post. She represents the Brahamvar Zilla Panchayat Constituency.
