Waste segregation must in SDMC area
New Delhi: On Friday, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (SDMC) Najafgarh zone sent a notice to all flats, shops, RWAs and cooperative group housing societies and made it mandatory to segregate waste from May 1. Residents are required to segregate waste into bio-degradable, non-biodegradable and domestic hazardous waste. SDMC trucks will collect kitchen waste daily and dry waste every three days.
Non-compliance will attract penalty.
SDMC will be organising composting of kitchen waste in nearby parks, the manure of which will be distributed among residents, the notice said. Mixed waste will not be collected, it read.
“No person shall organise an event or gathering of more than 100 people at any unlicenced place without intimating the local body, at least three working days in advance and the organiser shall ensure segregation of waste at source and handing over of segregated waste to the waste collector,” the notice read.
“At first, we will start with Dwarka and gradually pan out. Whatever waste is retrievable will be segregated at the dhalaos and sold to scrap dealers. We have already roped in around 100 ragpickers and given them 15 autorickshaws. We plan to rope in 2,000 more for three zones of SDMC. Central zone has its own system of waste segregation, of primary and secondary waste collection,” said Umesh Sachdeva, department of environment management services chief.
The segregation notice was sent keeping in view the recent guidelines issued by the environment ministry on solid waste management.
